Rescue Stories

Beau's Story

Beau has enriched my life with his unfettered joy. He is only about 7 months old, but has already experienced many trials, tribulations, challenges and changes. Beau, an almost completely white field ES about 3 months old at the time, was dropped off at an animal shelter after he was found wandering a road. He was very sick: infested with ringworm and ear mites, and suffering from kennel cough, coccidia and giardia. He was about 4 ½ months old before he became adoptable and his time was running out. A good Samaritan saw him at the shelter and felt sorry for him. She pulled him from the shelter and used her own money to put him in a dog boarding facility. She thought he was a cocker spaniel mix and the cocker rescue folks took over until they saw photos and recognized him as an English setter. The cocker group contacted MA Samuelson, one of the rescue angels for MBESC, who arranged for Noelle Seusy to foster. Noelle had just lost an older dog, Jack, and decided to foster Beau in Jack’s memory and to help her Irish setter through the transition of losing Jack. Noelle did a wonderful job of restoring Beau’s health, socializing him, teaching him some basic obedience, and introducing him to the “good life”.

I have had such rewarding experiences with rescuing ES that I decided to adopt Beau. He has blended in wonderfully with my “pack” of foofy show setters, who have been gently teaching him respect for his elders, how much fun the baby pool is and where the best hunting places are in the yard. Beau loves to ride on the top of the wheelbarrow full of hay when I feed the horses. Last evening, I called all the dogs in for bed and Beau did not come. I discovered he had scraped a shallow hole in the dirt my front yard and had curled up asleep, all alone. I gathered him in my arms, kissed him, and told him his homeless life was over and that there was a wonderful, soft dog bed in the house just for him. Needless to say he found the dog bed much nicer than dirt! I am very, very lucky to have Beau in my life. Oh, by the way, Beau is deaf.
